History and Geography Facts

Situated at the foot of the Toowoomba range, Withcott is a small town located in the Lockyer Valley region, 116 kilmetrres west of Brisbane and 10 kilometres east of Toowoomba, with a population of 1,844 people.

The town prides itself on it’s friendly rural atmosphere, offering a range of antique shops, bakeries and a great ‘watering hole’ hotel establishment. A perfect rest stop for weary travellers, Withcott is the last refreshment and fuel stop before Toowoomba.

Admire the views of the gorgeous surrounds, at the foot of the Great Dividing Range – the ideal vantage point, offering breathtaking views of the region from Tabletop Mountain, accessible via South Street, Toowoomba.

During the 2010-2011 floods, Withcott suffered extensive damage when a flash flood hit the town on 10 January 2011.

An annual region-wide garden competition has engaged the local schools, with students taking ownership of developing and maintaining a range of edible gardens.

The Foothills Festival has become an annual celebration with in excess of 100 pieces of artwork, sculptures and photography displays, and more than 50 stallholders and exhibitors.

A council-run mobile library visits on a fortnightly basis, to deliver library lending services, provide information in the form of print, magazines and DVDs and to offer their services to local schools.

Council supported a community-led initiative to add planter box gardens and a sense of place to a well-used truck stop and parking area on the Warrego Highway, so the town itself retained and increased its own sense of village, despite the location.

A men’s shed was established in the wake of the 2011 floods to assist with the human recovery, as men in the area still suffered depression, loss and on-going medical conditions caused by trauma.

Every Tuesday, a small group of volunteers generously give up their time to pick up litter on the Warrego Highway through Withcott, making sure the town is in top shape for visitors.

Without a doubt, any visitor to Withcott would agree, the township and people of Withcott are worthy of the esteemed accolade; Queensland’s Friendliest Town (2016).
