History And Geography Facts

Ilfracombe is a small town located in the Longreach region in Central West Queensland, situated on the Landsborough Highway, about 27 kilometres east of Longreach and 1,153 kilometres northwest of Brisbane. It is known as The Hub of the West, with a population of 348 people living in the region – only 190 people live in the town itself.

The main industry is sheep rearing, mainly for wool. Sheep stations were established in the area from 1864. Wellshot Station was once known as the biggest sheep station in the world – it ran 460,000 head of sheep. Ilfracombe was known as Wellshot until 1890.

The town was named after the coastal town of Ilfracombe in North Devon, England in 1891.

Ilfracombe has a number of heritage listed sites including, Beaconsfield Station (a former sheep wash station) and Mitchell Street Langenbaker House.

The town is home to a collection of antique agricultural machinery – stationed at the Ilfracombe Machinery and Heritage Museum.
