History and Geography Facts

Thallon is a south west Queensland town, 571 kilometres west of Brisbane, located between St George and the border with New South Wales at Mungindi.

The town, named after former Queensland Commissioner for Railways, James Forsyth Thallon is located in the Shire of Balonne, with a population of 250 residents.

Explorer Thomas Mitchell was the first European in the Thallon district, and his initials can still be found on a bloodwood tree near the Moonie River. In 1911, the area was set aside for closer settlement and 780 acres were gazetted as a town reserve.

Thallon is a major wheat and wool growing district.

Local Government Information

Thallon was gazetted in 1911 and was named after the Commissioner of Railways, Mr JF Thallon. The town is surrounded by prime grain growing country and draws grain in from Weengallon, Nindigully, Mungindi, Dirranbandi and Thallon.

The silos mural showcases icons of the district in the Moonie River and one of the amazing sun sets. It also recognizes members of Thallon’s Indigenous Community by the inclusion of a scarred tree and celebrates the area’s Agricultural base. The design titled ‘The Watering Hole’ was developed by the Artists Joel Fergie (The Zookeeper) and Travis Vinson (Drapl) in consultation with the Thallon Community.
