History and Geography Facts
Stonehenge is a small outback town in central west Queensland, in the Shire of Barcoo. Its name originates from when the area was a stopping point for bullock teams. A stone hut used by the bullock drivers to overnight in eventually fell into disuse, and the stone remains became known as Stonehenge.
Nearby is one of three areas used to base the Australian Department of Defence’s over-the-horizon radar system.

Located in Far West Queensland, in the heart of the Channel Country, Barcoo region is one of the more remote shires with an area of 61,974 square kilometres in far Western Queensland, incorporating the townships of Jundah, Stonehenge and Windorah. Situated 151kms from Longreach on the Thomson Development Road, Stonehenge heartily welcomes all visitors. To sign the visitors book Stonehenge style, you write your name in stone directly beside the main road not far from town. This tradition started years ago by the then mailman – the rest is history! A little further towards Jundah, you crest the jump-up and Swanvale Lookout – a fantastic spot to boil the billy with picnic tables & fireplaces.
