History and Geography
A small rural town in the Central Highlands region, about 140km south of Emerald and often known as the gateway to the Carnarvon ranges and national parks.
The area is on the traditional lands of the Kanolu people, and the broader region is also associated with the Wadja language group. Aboriginal people lived along the Comet River and surrounding the ranges long before the European settlement.
Local Government Information
The first recorded European explorer in the district was Ludwig Leichhardt, who had travelled through the area in 1844. He named sereral local landmarks, including the Expedition Range and camped near what is now Rolleston.
A settlement developed around a river crossing on what was then called the Brown River (later renamed the Comet River.) In 1862 a hotel was built to serve teamsters and travellers moving between Rockhampton and western Queensland. After local residents successfully petitioned for a township the site was surveyed in 1865.
The town was named after Christopher Rolleston, a pastoralist and senior colonial official who held land interests in the district during the 1860s.
