History and Geography Facts
Springsure was named for the natural springs found in local creeks and gullies at the time of settlement. The area has a long Aboriginal history, with the Gangalu and Wadja peoples traditionally inhabiting the region. Historical sites include the Staircase Range Cutting, built by Chinese immigrants in 1905, Old Rainworth Fort (1862), and Cairdbeign Homestead and School, which display relics from the town’s past. The Federation Woolshed, a replica of early 20th-century British sheds, serves as both a museum and information center.
