History and Geography Facts

Established in 1890, Yungaburra (originally Allumbah Pocket), takes its name from the language of the Yidinji Aboriginal people. It is said to mean meeting place, a place of enquiring or questioning. Prior to European settlement the area around Yungaburra was inhabited by about 16 different Indigenous groups, who met to trade, camp and conduct ceremonies.

Yungaburra is located on the Atherton Tableland in Far North Queensland, roughly 67 kms from Cairns, with a population of 1,116 people.

Within the village there are 19 sites listed on the Queensland Register for the National Trust of Australia (see Old Town Loop brochure) creating a vibrant and interesting town to visit or live in.

The village of Yungaburra is surrounded by countryside which has been influenced and shaped by many, now extinct, volcanoes. The landscape is stunning, with outstandingly beautiful natural attractions: crater lakes, waterfalls and World Heritage rainforest. This tranquil and picturesque village is situated 720 metres (2400 feet) above sea level.

Adjacent to Lake Tinaroo, the historical town centre is in close proximity to a boat ramp, the recently established Afghanistan Avenue of Honour (see www.avenueofhonour.com.au) and nature walks and rails along Peterson Creek.

Historically, timber and agriculture were the main industries, with tourism and hospitality services, boutique businesses (example: www.globalfreestyle.com.au) innovative specialist services (example: www.ecobiotics.com.au), health (example: www.thedoctorhouse.com) and wellbeing (example: www.massageyungaburra.com) now current key industries.
