History and Geography Facts

Rainbow Bay, as it is believed to have been unofficially named by its surveyor, Captain Henry John Rous in 1828 while aboard the HMS Rainbow. His survey expedition also included a whale boat trip up the Tweed River and assisting in the recovery of escaped convicts.

Officially known as Shark or Sharks Bay up till 1925 when the Point Danger Progress Association proposed the name change and was adopted in the same year as Rainbow Bay.

Rainbow Bay is right next to Snapper Rocks; a world-famous surf break often called the Superbank.

The Rainbow Bay SLSC was built in 1962 and is still present today. It is the southernmost SLSC in Queensland and serves as a wonderful community space.

Rainbow Bay has long been one of the Gold Coast’s most popular beaches.

Rainbow Bay in Coolangatta is managed by City of Gold Coast council. Located in South-east Queensland, Australia’s second largest local government including 57km of beaches and home to more than half a million people. Things to do and see

1.       Rainbow Bay beach is the top of the list. It’s free and fun for all and let’s face it, if you’re on the GC, chances are you’re keen on the beach.

2.       Point Danger has stunning views up and down the coastline.

3.       Captain Cook memorial and Lighthouse, located right on the border. Take in some history and enjoy the view at the same time.

4.       Snapper Rocks is a local geographical attraction. Many visitors remark at its beauty.

5.       The Centaur Remembrance Walk is an easy walk highlighting certain events throughout the history of the region.

6.       Whale and Dolphin watching – Usually happening between May and November, you can stop off at any number of coastal locations and see these majestic beasts in the ocean.

Rainbow Bay in Coolangatta is surrounded by everything you could ever want. Beautiful beaches, restaurants, shopping, entertainment, every type of accommodation and with such a bustling nightlife as well, you may need a second holiday to recover.
