History and Geography Facts

Maaroom is a small community on the Fraser Coast, with a population of approx. 220 residents. Close to Maryborough, it is only 5kms off the Cooloola Coast Highway.

As you crest the hill on the way into Maaroom you have a spectacular view of our World Heritage Fraser Island lying just across the Great Sandy Strait. The boat ramp and the floating jetty at the entrance to Maaroom Creek provides a safe anchorage for professional and recreational fishermen to launch their boats.

The shore at Maaroom is a significant area for viewing migratory waders, as they rest before continuing their journey. The sheltered waterway of the Great Sandy Strait is great for canoeing, boating, fishing, crabbing and for house-boating. You can enjoy the sights of sea turtles, rays and dugongs.

Our wonderful foreshore is perfect for picnics and BBQs with children’s playgrounds and exercise equipment nearby. The floating jetty is popular with local fishermen.

The Fraser Coast is a mix of stunning landscapes, islands, cities and towns. From Fraser Island - the world's largest sand island to the heritage streetscapes of Maryborough; from the rich farmlands of Tiaro to the sheltered waters of Hervey Bay, one of Australia's most popular beach destinations, from old mining villages to peaceful seaside retreats set on the shoreline of the Great Sandy Strait. The Fraser Coast sits within the Great Sandy Biosphere, which is part of a world network of Biosphere Reserves.

Maaroom Caravan Park has an idyllic shady setting with kangaroos grazing on the lawns. The saltwater swimming pool is popular in Summer. The friendly proprietors, Chris & Debbie, offer drive through caravan sites, shady camping areas and cabins. The Caravan Park is the only land-based business in town. At their shop you can purchase bread, milk, groceries, including bait, fuel and gas supplies.

Maaroom is the traditional home of the Butchalla people. It began as a popular fishing get away. Back then the road in was unsealed rough and winding between trees; the canopies of which met over the road. People had very basic fishing shacks.
